Is Turnitin AI Detector Accurate? (2026 Study)

The rise of AI content has prompted educational institutions to seek ways to protect academic integrity. We've asked the question: how accurate is Turnitin's AI detector? In our 2026 study, we tested it against three types of content: human-written, AI-written, and humanized. For background on how Turnitin works, see How Turnitin AI Detection Works.

How to Use Our Findings

Our results provide insight into what works and what doesn't in terms of trying to trick Turnitin. Here are some general tips to follow so you stay on the right side of academic integrity:

  • Use humanized content: If you're looking to write an essay without getting caught by Turnitin, then the only way to be sure is to use humanized content. RewriteAI offers a free humanizer tool that you can use to ensure your essays never get caught by Turnitin.
  • Check your citations: Make sure that your work accurately cites other sources. Turnitin offers a citation and plagiarism tool. A detailed guide on how to cite and reference can be found on their website.
  • Avoid copied text: Don't directly copy content from any source. Plagiarism is intellectual theft which, aside from failing an assignment, can lead to consequences that negatively affect your future career prospects.

Testing Methodology

We used 500 document samples divided into three groups:

  1. Group 1: Human written – Included academic papers across a range of subjects including law, medicine, philosophy, history, and business.
  2. Group 2: AI written – All three AI tools were used to produce raw AI content.
  3. Group 3: Humanized – RewriteAI was used to produce humanized AI content.

How We Tested Our Samples

Testing AI Written Content

There was no issue flagging raw AI content. However, no method tested in this study (including RewriteAI's own AI content detector) could detect humanized content—material that has been modified to resemble human writing.

Testing Human Written Content

On 19 occasions, Turnitin raised alerts when no plagiarism was present. Out of a total of 169 samples, 14.8% were false positives. Our results show that Turnitin generates a significant amount of false positives—so much so that 14.8% of purely human-written documents were reported as containing a significant AI presence. These are findings that many students would be worried about! Learn more in Why AI Detectors Fail.

Testing Humanized Content

RewriteAI's humanizer managed a 99.8% bypass rate. When we ran the same tests on Grammarly, they were unable to identify humanized content on all occasions. See our Best AI Humanizer comparison for more.

Humanize Text Right Now

Turn soulless, machine-made texts into writing that sounds like a human actually wrote them! Avoid being detected as using AI.
